PRESIDENT BUHARI UNVEILS IMOTA RICE MILL, THE BIGGEST IN AFRICA

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday unveiled the Imota Rice Mill, the biggest of its kind in Africa and fourth largest in the world.

The mill with an annual paddy requirement of over 240,000MT to produce 32 metric tonnes per hour, 2.5 million bags of 50kg rice per annum.

The mill will generate about 1,500 direct jobs and 250,000 indirect jobs to Lagosians. The final product is called ‘Eko Rice’.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MOVE TO ADDRESS POST HARVEST LOSSES BY FARMERS

The federal government has said that over 30 per cent of food produced in Nigeria every year is challenged by post-harvest losses due to a lack of storage facilities, transportation and lack of equipment.

To address the problem of post-harvest losses, the federal government has concessioned 17 silos with 6000 metric tonne storage capacity to the private sector to enable farmers to have access to storage facilities.

AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK AND OTHERS TO FUND AGRICULTURE IN NIGERIA WITH $538M

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Mohammad Abubakar disclosed recently this at the Second West and Central Africa Post-Harvest Congress and Exhibition (WCAPHCE) 2022 in Abuja

In a multilateral financing syndication, the African Development Bank will be providing $210m, the Islamic Development Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development provide $310m, and the Government of Nigeria will provide $18.05m,” to fund the first phase of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones for Nigeria programme.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), lauded this development on Wednesday at the Feed Africa Summit of Heads of State and Government in Dakar, Senegal

SIMEON EHUI APPOINTED NEW IITA DG

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Simeon Ehui as the Director-General for IITA and Regional Director for Continental Africa for CGIAR.

This was contained in a statement made available in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital at the weekend by the organization’s Media Director, Katherine Lopez.
